[ he squints for the longest time, trying to put a voice to a name or even a face ... katara doesn't know that many people, does she? she's not really that popular — ]
[ oh, wait. she is. it's a future kid. ]
Uh, yeah ... [ uncle had claimed to slew the last surviving dragon. that's a well-known story, isn't it? but if it's coming from katara — not his katara, but another katara. their katara, who isn't really his katara. she's the one who knows about ran and shaw and him having danced with dragons, but she's still his katara in some way if she knows that. but ... ] I met two with the Sun —
[ wasn't he promised death? yes. yes, lots of really angry and hurtful death. zuko may break his honour without really breaking his honour but he has never gone back on his word. and he doubts he would, even if he were twenty or thirty or however old these guys know him to be. the sun warriors are a secret. there's a long, long — ] Er. My great-grandfather was responsible for beginning the tradition of hunting them. [ and he doesn't sound as though he condones it at all. ]
[ everyone's got their own things to do in this place, ways to keep busy, quests the queen(s) have sent them on. sometimes, the distraction is something as simple as helping friends find their way around the map, introducing them to new technology or even celebrating the chance to know them. korra knows she should have checked in with zuko sooner — all the distractions in the world can't dismiss this thought from her mind. since she's the avatar and it's her job to keep balance in her world, she's taking that to mean she should keep an eye on all the benders (and non-benders that she knows) brought here.
mako checked in a few days ago. now it's korra's turn. ]
Uhhh, heeeey, Fire Lord! [ um ] Zuko. It's Korra. [ uhhHHHHh ] I wanted to check in, see how you were, maybe um... ask if you were up to anything soon? Some friends and I are going traveling, and I wanted to know if you'd like to join us.
It's just Zuko. [ it's the first thing he says right off the bat. it's still a little awkward to be called fire lord rather than prince. even though ozai would tell him he needs to man up and accept the title, wear it with pride, and see to it those who don't recognise it are dealt with swiftly, zuko opts to follow his gut, as iroh would say in many confusing words, and try and not place himself above others. it's a title of respect, but zuko still hasn't done anything worthy to earn it. he says it warmly, ] Hi, Korra.
Uh. [ does he have any plans? not really. he has a little quest he must do in order to restore his honour, but he doubts that's really a concern of korra's, her wanting to know he's fucked up big time in his own court. ] I was going to go back to Caer Scima with Toph. [ he pauses for a moment, tone clearly uncertain, ] Isn't it against the rules I travel with you?
[ GOOD DAY, SENPAI-STARSHINE..... this message is probably kind of an accident. Mostly in that Bolin was gunning to make a whole network post about it but somehow failed. But that's fine!!! Whatever!!! It's the spirit of the sharing that really counts, and he's really hyped to be sharing this boon with any and all takers. This is like the nicest thing that's happened in forever. (He'll still be embarrassed. What can you do, though. That's life.)
First and foremost, it bears an attached image of....... an image. Like what a super-rad picture hell yeah picturing it all up. Possibly not as high-quality as a face-to-face showing would be, but that's the drawback of locket stuff anyway. ]
So handsome family or handsome family, am I right?
[ zuko's really confused about this entire message. it's clear to him he hadn't been the intended recipient; he can't recognise anyone in this photograph, nor can he really recognise the voice without the face, as the expressions bolin dons are ones to remember. ]
[ but he takes a few moments, anyway. whoever sent him this message clearly is very proud of this photograph. the family is handsome, even if he can't quite name the people in it. and it reminds him of the photographs he had burned on embers island. he shouldn't have done it; those were memories he'll never be able to relive, but he could always remember them fondly. it would be nice to gather everyone around the fire and tell them stories about ozai being a father, before he had turned into the fatherlord, and becoming lost in what he remembered of his mother, or even the moments where he and azula had gotten along like a house on fire. he had robbed himself of that. ]
... Who is this? [ if he knew bolin a little better, he'd recognise him from those thick eyebrows. ]
Pardon the intrusion. This is Lord El-Melloi II, you gave Kaldur and myself a hand with the matter of Redgate a few days ago.
I'm contacting you because of Reynard's recent actions - they appear to be his acts of revenge based on the outcome of October's battle. I was informed that you were presend and participated - I wanted to check in and ensure that nothing of yours has been lost or taken by Reynard.
[ zuko does not really want to talk about this. the more he conceals, the more he doesn't feel — there isn't a problem if he doesn't acknowledge it. that river of denial? he's swimming so deeply within it even if the water is cold as the north pole and he longs to heat it with his bending. he doesn't want to acknowledge it. ]
[ it'd be easier if he simply said he didn't take anything from me and leave it at that, but zuko has always been a poor liar. he doesn't believe in lies — he's not azula, with her ability to trick toph into believing she is a four hundred foot tall purple platypus bear with pink horns and silver wings. ]
[ his own tone is quiet, as if the mere projection of his voice may awaken him from where he slumbers in that river and spark a raging inferno that can't even lick itself across the drabwurld for he has lost the core of his very person. ] He took my bending.
I was hoping I might be able to have a chat with you about a couple of things, at the behest of Higgin, the majordomo of Caer Scima. I'm looking to take note of your current whereabouts and any special abilities you may have or may have been granted by Morla.
I appreciate that this is actually very forward, but you'd be doing me an incredible favour by getting in touch.
[ delivered by hawk is a package, wrapped in leather and tied off with twine. knotted within the twine is a woven tassel with lucky coins and a slip of paper with well wishes for the season written in atla-ese. within the box are two leather armbands lined with sheepskin on the inside, and metal on the outside. upon the metal is the fire nation symbol, obviously carved in with fire. ]
( cassie doesn't have the faintest clue what to get zuko for christmas. she'd been racking her brain for awhile, wondering what he might like, what he might appreciate. she doesn't know him as well as she wants to, but she knows him well enough. he left tea for her - tea that reminds him of home - and the most beautiful pair of gloves, and bangles... but what should she get for him? it takes her awhile to think of something. and when she does, it's not just anything ordinary. it takes time to procure, to conjure, the things she needs.
even if he refuses to take her with him wherever he goes, she will find a way to make sure he's safe. it isn't anywhere near as elaborate as leaving a hot cup of tea, and beautiful, so very well-thought-out gifts from the heart. but it is a necklace, spelled to protect him. it isn't entirely foolproof, of course, as she hasn't perfected her art yet. she'll be working on that soon... she hopes. but it will keep him from being killed. and it will also help protect him from himself - perhaps its most valuable aspect.
I just wanted to let you know that I'm leaving Caer Scima. Tomorrow, once the sun's up. ( that's all the information she's allowed to give him, really. she might disclose that she's headed for the station, but she's been sworn to secrecy with her task otherwise. keep it quiet. keep it under wraps. and she has no idea what's going to face her when she gets there. she knows it involves learning, being taught, more about magic - her magic, and magic in general - but she doesn't know what, exactly, that's going to be. she wonders if he'll miss her. maybe she should write. )
[ this is … it's not really expected. it's quick and punctual and to the point. it's too concise for him to simply shrug it off and remain unaffected by the concern that swarms within him. she's usually babbling, like sokka — who he's grateful isn't as attentive toward him as he has been since he discovered zuko's bending is able to be stolen from him, as he's certain his presence would make this tense conversation even more awkward. his first thought is that she's mad — but he isn't as arrogant as to believe she's leaving caer scima because of him. considering he can barely fathom the idea, months after it's reveal, that he's a good fire lord, he isn't going to take a step into being unlike himself and believe she's wishing to leave her new home because of him. ]
[ it's something bigger than him, he supposes — though, he has never been able to truly glean what those are until someone's neck-deep in ostrich horse dung. ]
Oh. [ he's quiet; the pause is sharp. he isn't quite certain of what to say. ] Uh, be careful. It's not safe out there.
[ normally, sokka doesn't let this kind of stuff get to him. maybe it's just being away from basically everyone he loves that has him on edge, and close enough to tipping over that the only thing keeping him from cliffdiving is zuko's voice, which, in this circumstance, is strangely calming. it's weird; zuko's supposed to be the angry one, not sokka, but here they are. ]
[ he grumbles loudly, throwing his hands in the air. ] Ugh! What was that guy's problem? [ folding his arms across his chest, he huffs indignantly, frowning so hard his eyebrows might actually connect. he's a furious pouter. ] And what's a shuck? And why did it spell my name Soccer? [ he doesn't even know what a soccer is. he also asks a lot of questions when he's mad. sorry, zuko. ]
[ where's katara when you need her? zuko doesn't have the right words for this. where aang would pat him on the back and toph would insult the guy, katara threatening to punch him in the throat if she wasn't already seething with a comment zuko knows was meant to be merely off-handed, he finds himself at a loss. he doesn't deal with this. he's been on the end of such barbs before, careless and flung with very little thought toward him with the expectation it wouldn't sear and shred his heart. ]
[ the best thing for sokka right now, in zuko's opinion, is to let him rant it out. he'll tire himself out eventually. he's sort of like a turtle duck like that. ] My locket doesn't like me. [ it's ceased in its fits lately, but he's anxious to know when it'll make a fool out of him again. he continues to walk, wanting to keep his gaze straight instead of peering at sokka like he's something breakable and delicate. ] Don't worry about that shuck. [ he'll have to ask thomas what that means, but in the meantime, it seems to fit. ] He doesn't know you — he didn't mean it.
[it's clear she's holding it close to her face -- her words are audible over the sounds of the battle, clanging steel, whinnying of horses, the general din is softer.]
[ with all that clanging in the background, he has several minutes. it's a little silent on zuko's end, save for the sound of fire crackling in the background. ]
Grell! [ the usual boyish happiness his voice often takes to when he's speaking to someone he knows isn't there. it's more worry, than anything. zuko may be oblivious, but he knows where she is — and, truthfully, he's been worried about all those he calls friends. ] Are you okay?
[ so, apparently thomas is in fact friends enough with zuko that he can project into his head. surprise, buddy! ]
Zuko. Can you hear me? This is Thomas. Minho, Teresa and I are on our way to Azure from Caer Scima now. Have you left yet? If you get away from the battle and get the chance, let me know you're okay.
TELEPATHYYY hi thomas not even your sexy voice is welcome.
[ perhaps thomas is able to get a read from zuko. perhaps that's how he knows it is zuko he's reached. he's thinking of mai, and how much he misses her, a girl with pale skin and black hair, and knives within her sleeves as he knows she'd easily smack him upside the head and tell him he's an idiot for not taking care of himself. and he imagines uncle, chuckling in the background, as it's always been him that takes to zuko in such a manner. ]
[ but, of course, it's all ruined my thomas' voice. ]
Thom — [ zuko knows the voice isn't coming from his locket, despite him beginning to address him as such. the charred contraption is deep within his pockets, and he usually feels it vibrate with heat when someone chooses to call him. he peers around, uncertain of himself, as he's been taking to his own wounds. ]
[ it's not that sokka is worried or anything. really, he's not. he'd just really like to know if zuko is okay or not because it's been ... weeks and he's heard it on good authority that the battles are over so zuko should be back by now, right? ]
[ unless ... something horrible happened to him, and then sokka's not sure what he would do, exactly. he's really hoping nothing horrible has happened, though. he'd really like to believe that zuko is okay and he just ... took some kind of detour or got lost or maybe his teleporty powers stopped working. (sokka's not really sure how anyone could get lost with the ability to teleport, but he can think about that later.) ]
[ right now, he's intent on contacting zuko, so he at least knows if his friend is alive. in good shape would also be good, but sokka knows that might be asking for too much. if his voice sounds frantic and slightly high pitched, it's because it is. he's also yelling, just in case zuko can't hear him for some reason. ]
[ talking to zuko? that's what you get for breathing. ]
Hi, Alice. [ he's just being casual in azure, trying to see if he can get his dragon to sit. he does, whenever he calls him by the name sokka had given him. his voice is casual and friendly, not quite revealing in the fact that they had all just survived one of the bigger battles of his time in the drabwurld. ] Are you okay?
[a messenger bird finds its way to Azure, with a letter for Zuko. the handwriting is neat, and the cadence of the words should be familiar.]
Zuko,
Forgive the informality by which I start this letter, but I am sending it to you not in any official capacity but merely as myself, and so it felt best to forgo titles.
Back after the battles, I was given a task in the wake of the Jabberwock's death -- to collect something of what she left behind, and bring it to Caer Scima when I could so that she could have a burial, as much as any of us. I have some of her ashes, yet after the chaos I became occupied with a task that took me a great deal of time, and so you could say that she has traveled with me since then.
Now that I am back and settled, I wish to complete this task. And I would like to ask you, as you were there with me -- when it takes place, when she is buried, would you want to attend?
[ it takes zuko a moment to, you know, listen. it's a little strange, anyone being surprised prince zuko has a sister. but, then again, zuko hasn't really spoken about azula in the drabwurld. it had made his heart ache, thinking about her. ]
[ he thinks to ask how do you know? before he remembers azula's here. that hadn't been a dream, but a confusing and overwhelming reality. so, he swallows that down, rendering himself looking a little less stupid than usual. (he's so glad this is audio.) ]
[ he should've been expecting this. although he suspected azula had only replied to alice to stir her up, to somehow be unfair and unkind, he wonders, by her message now, if she had gone about expressing her own concern all wrong. still, he isn't so sure of her motivations. zuko isn't so sure if he ever has been. ]
[ zuko sighs. ] Why do you care, Azula? You don't even know Alice. You don't even know those children.
[ Zuko will find a small gift wrapped in parchment paper on the first day of Yule. Revealed he will find a small jar that has been filled will real, live lightning that crackles and fades, very much alive inside its container but completely safe to touch on the outside. There is no explanation except for a small note left in a bold, handwritten scrawl:
audio;
